American container imports near the record height, where the final dates of the tariff rise

American container imports jumped to their second highest level in July 2025, with storage units of 2.62 million equivalent containers-555 containers less than the peak May 2022, according to the Descartes Systems Group. The height of 18.2 % monthly month reflects a rush by importers to overcome the commercial policy changes on the horizon.

The latest global shipping report for Descartes shows July 2.6 % on an annual basis, with importers accelerating shipments before the main final dates, including the cancellation of August 29 to exempt minimal and the end of October 15 from the truce of the United States and the United States.

China led the increase, as imports increased by 44.4 % from June to 923,075 temperatures, increasing its share of US imports to 35.2 % from 28.8 % per month. The western coast ports continued to control 45.8 % of the market share, while Houston increased 122 % in folders from China.

“The increase in the July number highlights the impact of tariff policies on import activity in the United States, as well as model seasonal trends,” said Jackson Wood, director of industry strategy in Descartes.

The other Asian suppliers also published gains – kong 47.8 %, and South Korea increased by 16.8 %, India, an increase of 13.6 %, and Thailand, an increase of 13.1 %. Germany was the only ten highest origin to decrease, a decrease of 0.6 %.

While RISE indicates strong commercial flows, some analysts, including John Macon, of the John Macon container report, questioned Descartes, citing a 4.3 % deviation between its estimates and official port statistics in late 2024.
