Five new lines are upgraded under construction as an existing network to increase the capacity.
The Minister of Transport in Kazakhstan, Nurlan Sorbanayev, announced a major program for new structure promotions and infrastructure to increase the ability of the beating shipping movement on the national network with an area of 16,000 km.
With 57 % of the network that needs to be renewed, which affects the speed and safety of charging operations, “the infrastructure operates at full capacity”, according to Syrianbayev. “To improve efficiency and sustainability by 2030, we plan to build new lines, update 5,000 km from the current track, and fix 11,000 km.”
Five new lines currently under construction in Kazakhstan:
- Dostyk – Moyinty, connects the Chinese border with Central Kazakhstan
- Daving line in southern Kazakhstan
- Darbaza – Maktaral in the Turkestan region
- Moyinty – Kyzylzhar to connect West and Central Kazakhstan, and
- Bakhta – Ayagazz in East Kazakhstan, to improve links with China.
Dostyk – Moyinty and ALMATY Lines are scheduled to be completed before the appointment later this year. The remaining projects will be completed by 2026, according to the minister, while this year will start to update 3000 km of the current infrastructure.
The Railways Network in Kazakhstan (KTZ) is a major component of the international transportation path (TITR) or the middle corridor, which avoids Russia and is the shortest railway road between China and Europe.
Traffic has multiplied through the KTZ network over the past ten years, with a total of 27.4 million tons in 2024. This trend is expected to continue reaching 33 million tons in 2025, 54 million tons in 2026, and 67 million tons by 2029.
Expectations also indicate that by 2035, traffic may reach 100 million tons, at a value of 4.4 trillion, estimated at 4.4 trillion dollars (8.2 billion US dollars). “Our goal is to reach this number soon,” said Sorbayev.
Seven charging stations are now working in border crossing points, with two new facilities that are scheduled to open soon and five in the planning stage. Sorbanayev says that the improved charging network will enable Kazakhstan to provide railway products that offer short crossing times, competitive prices and improved service.
