A significant expansion has been launched to communicate with the current national network and the introduction of agricultural rail charging services and agriculture.
The cerrejón rail is necessary for the Colombian economy.
Colombia President Gustavo Petro again confirmed his government’s ambition to re -display and expand the Cerrejón railway, the only record scale line in the country, during a visit to the Cesar region on August 21.
The 150 km line was opened in 1984 and connects the largest coal mine in South America to the export station in Porto Bolivar on the Caribbean coast. The proposals include building 300 km from the new infrastructure to connect the line with the Santa Marta – La Dorada Corridor, the main axis between the north and southern Colombia, as well as the introduction of agricultural and agricultural rail charging services.
The font is operated under the privilege by Venoco and Linkur, which is multinationals with a Cerrejón mine. Under proposals, the concession can be expanded to include agricultural products. Cesar and La Guajira are the main banana producers, and will reach the railway to Porto Bolivar and Santa Marta direct export.
At its peak, the railway has moved 50 million tons of coal annually, but the government claims that the volumes have decreased to about 10 million tons in recent years. Petro argues that this decrease results in an unexploited infrastructure and has developed plans to develop the “Corridor of Tourism and Social Development”.
Besides the challenges of re -negotiating the current concessions, Petro also acknowledged that the development of the La Guajira and Cesar regions to support tourism and increase agricultural exports depends on the support of Wayúu, the original inhabitant community in the region.
