Arriva buys British train construction and maintenance group

The acquisition of RTS Infrastructure will expand Arriva’s capabilities in Britain.

The acquisition will expand Arriva’s activities into the infrastructure construction business. RTS customers include Network Rail.

ARRIVA announced that it has completed the acquisition of British company RTS Infrastructure. The deal significantly expands the Group’s maintenance and depot business and also enables it to enter the British rail infrastructure construction market for the first time. The value of the deal was not disclosed.

RTS Infrastructure is based in Leeds and provides railway depot services and infrastructure works such as platform upgrades and trackworks across the UK railway network. Clients include infrastructure manager Network Rail, passenger operators and original equipment manufacturers. The company holds a Network Rail main contractor licence, which Arriva says provides it with new capabilities, allowing it to offer additional services to new and existing customers.

The deal also includes the lease of a warehouse near Leeds which will expand Arriva’s maintenance and service business.

Arriva was previously a subsidiary of German Rail (DB), and was sold to global infrastructure investment manager I Squared in June 2024. It has two business units in Britain, UK Trains and UK Bus, and is also active in 10 European countries.

“The RTS infrastructure not only enhances our depot capacity, but also provides valuable construction and infrastructure capabilities within the company and enhances our competitiveness in the rail sector,” says Amanda Furlong, Managing Director of Arriva UK Trains.

“This transaction is essential to our diversification strategy in the UK rail market.”
