Taiwan’s Cabinet approved a NT$32.7 billion (US$1 billion) project to build an 8.4-kilometre monorail in Tainan on October 21. Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2026, and the line should open in 2032.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications gave its initial approval in March 2024 regarding the route, system design and estimated construction budget.

The MRT’s Blue Line will run in an arc from Yongkang’s Daqiao district through the city’s busiest area to the Tainan Cultural Center, with a branch to Rende. There will be 10 stations, and two of the three terminals will connect to mainline rail services.

The government agreed to provide NT$19.3 billion in financing with the city investing the remaining NT$13.4 billion.

Tainan plans to build five more rapid transit lines in the future.
