Trump announces a 10% tariff increase on Canada after the collapse of trade talks

President Donald Trump said Saturday that he would raise tariffs on Canada by an additional 10% “above what they’re paying now,” according to a Reuters report. The announcement was made in a post on Truth Social just two days after the end of trade talks with Ottawa.

Trump said that the action was due to what he described as a misleading announcement from the government of the Canadian province of Ontario. The ad included a video clip of the late President Ronald Reagan, a Republican icon, saying that tariffs cause trade wars and economic disasters.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday that Canada is ready to resume trade talks with the United States. The US Commerce Department, the White House and Carney’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
