DRS is running container trains between Daventry and Coatbridge until the end of the year.
Private British freight company Direct Rail Services (DRS) has launched a local wagonload service, initially for a two-month trial period. Trains run six days a week between Daventry in the Midlands and Coatbridge in Scotland.
The intermodal service is operated by Class 88 locomotives along the 483 km route, is fully electrified, and operates daily from Sunday to Friday, with a capacity of up to 30 containers. The trains will operate until the end of the year, and service is likely to continue if there is sufficient demand from shipping companies. DRS already runs three other daily Anglo-Scottish freight trains for trainload customers.
“This new service represents a great opportunity for those who have thought about rail but have not yet switched from road,” says Gottfried Emmer, Managing Director of Rail at DRS’s parent company Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS).
“The unique feature of this train is that it consists of freight from multiple customers, making it ideal for companies that want to leverage the railway but lack the volume to justify their own train,” Emmer says.
