Siemens Eurosprinter locomotives are certified for the ETCS 3 baseline

The European Union Railway Agency (ERA) grants the type license for Baseline 3.4.

The European Union Railway Agency (ERA) has granted Siemens Mobility a license to upgrade its Eurosprinter ES64F4 locomotives to ETCS Baseline 3.4. Tugs equipped with the Atlas ETCS system can now meet the latest European safety and interoperability standards, enabling more efficient and coordinated cross-border operations.

The ETCS upgrade project was launched in December 2020, with prototype conversions completed at the Siemens Munich Allach plant in Germany 16 months later. After extensive testing and validation, the type license application was submitted as planned to the ERA last December. The approval represents a major milestone in securing the long-term deployment of the tug fleet on key European shipping lanes.

“We have been supporting our locomotives and our customers for decades, ensuring long-term reliability and smooth cross-border operation,” says Stephen Popsen, Vice President of Locomotives and Passenger Coaches at Siemens Mobility.

More than 250 Eurosprinter locomotives have been delivered to various operators across Europe since their introduction in the early 2000s. They are the predecessors to the successful Vectron platform. The locomotives are designed for cross-border operation, and currently operate across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Poland and the Czech Republic.
