The Australian federal government has updated its shipping strategy and the national supply chain and launched a new national action plan to address the specific issues.

Productivity, flexibility, carbon and data removal are recognized as priority areas of attention. The national action plan offers priority for the main areas that the government and the shipping industry will work together over the next five years.

These include:

  • Developing a national shipment plan to ensure a “consistent and coordinated” response to disrupt the important supply chain
  • Developing an investment in the infrastructure infrastructure to direct investment decisions in infrastructure
  • Carry out safety research on battery traction techniques and zero emissions for charging vehicles, including locomotives,
  • Current and future shipping networks to ensure what is required to support effective and effective operations.

The federal government says that the national shipping strategy reviews a period of significant change in this sector during the past five years, including the aftermath of the Covid-19s, harsh air events and employee deficiency.

The railway is just less than two-thirds of the local shipping movement in 2023-24, with large shipments such as charcoal and iron ore, which represents the majority. A total of 447.9 billion tons has been transported by railways, while 249 billion tons were transported on the road. However, the railway market share has grown only 1.1 % in 2023-24, while the road market share grew by 3 %.

Documentation of the strategy, shipping growth projects according to the situation between 2020 and 2050 as follows:

  • Air: 103 %
  • Road: 77 %
  • Railways: 6 %
  • Local coastal shipping: 0 %

Welcoming the publication of the strategy, says Caroline Wilki, CEO of the Australian Railways Association, says the shipping sector is “at a critical turn, with an urgent need for greater use of railways to create a more productive and sustainable national freight network that meets the future needs of Australia.”
