Detecting the hymn of the supply chain in art mesher

This story appeared for the first time in the July issue of Xchang, Xchang, Thought leadership magazine for the supply chain management profession and the publication of a brother to the media and commercial events DC speed.

Art Mesher spent his career in thinking deeply in the role that technology should play in the supply chain. This focus began with a desire to improve the vision on the shipping sidewalks in Detone Hudson retail stores, as he had a truck emptying function. She continued to crystallize while he was an analyst in the practice of integrated logistics service strategies in Gartner in the 1990s, and he faded entirely in the DESCARTES Systems Group, where he eventually worked as an executive president.

There are many priorities associated with Mesher, who is now the Chairman of the Board of Directors in the Gainsystems software. Thanks to the leading cloud networks and software models such as the SAAS service for supply chains. In Descartes, it helped develop the first multi -sided statement, the first platform for the exchange of electronic data for the charger holder, and the first logistical networks upon request.

But what seems that people remember more about Mesher is a PowerPoint presentation that he made while he was in Gartner in the late 1990s. This presentation developed what he called “3V from the supply chain frame” and define vision, speed and changes as main principles that supply chains need to be addressed in order to achieve a competitive advantage.

Two years ago, in an attempt to inspire companies to continue to focus on these principles, Mesher, the Board of Directors of the Supply Series (CSCMP), and Agile Business Media & Events launched a prizes held at the annual EDGE conference in CSCMP. This year, the “Commercial Innovation Award 3 V” competition will include three contestants in the finals that offer the applications of their most influential companies for the Mesher framework in front of a committee of judges. (Information can be found about the competition, including presentations guidelines, on CSCMP EDGE.)

Mesher took some time to discuss the 3 V and the Award program with Xchange supply chain Executive Editor Susan Lasifeld.

Q: Can you tell me how a 3 -volt frame was developed?

A: So I knew that I would leave Gartner. At that time, Gartner was very competitive, and the idea of being a great analyst was about the ability to kill the dragon, expose myths or present things differently. The idea was to create something essential and fruitful. Can you write a portion of the search that people will get like the hymn and will also test time?

As you know, when I talk about this with people, I often ask them, “What is the most amazing and group rock music song?” There is a little discussion. I admire “Jude” personally, but “Hell’s Bells” gets some bilies. From time to time, the “stairs to the sky” comes. But the idea was to be silent and frustrated.

I was following the man who invented [the term] “ERP” (institutions planning) – which was difficult to overcome if you asked me. So with this comment, I wanted to do something good. It was a little bit of my swanish song.

Q: What is the main focus of the presentation?

A: My problem was that when everyone went to look at the supply chains to provide Money to consider supply chains for Make more Money, the measurement will be in war with diversification. This war was between unification and diversification – between saving money and earning more money – creating tremendous tension in work.

The main thing I was looking for is, how can the supply chain affect companies ’competitiveness? This was the main question that we were trying to answer. My point of view was 3 volts. You need to use Vision, Then to distinguish [yourself]You have to embrace Contrast. You cannot eliminate it, you cannot run from it, you just have to embrace it. Then the competitive feature will be rooted in speedAnd the speed by which you can reassemble your network. Because as you know, supply chains are networks, and change all the time. It is the speed of re -installation – this speed – will be real discrimination – as long as you adopt contrast. So she wrote the paper, and had a greater history of life.

Q: If you have to make the presentation today, would you change anything?

A: Well, I have updated for 20 years [to the framework]And it is now eight years. What I hear is that most people find it closely relevant today. It is a good thing because the idea is to be a little advanced from the package. [In the update,] We talk a lot about the new monitoring economy and how the vision really graduated.

The update talks about how to move from the Internet of Things to the Internet, names and verbs. Therefore, people, places, and things that are connected and feeding information engines in the actual time that understand the procedures (or verbs) performed by the topics (or names), the state or the place to create the clarity of the comprehensive supply chain. Currently, they call the “agent”.

This is the development of the idea of vision during its transmission, as you know, follow my truck to investigate the suppliers and comply with mixing and use carbon. By the way, we see you all the time. So we definitely control what you want to buy, and you are under constant monitoring, right?

The story I use to clarify this is that I am a Jewish man, and I was a dated eight -year Christian woman before we got married. While I was in the middle of dating, I started getting Chrostianmingle.com ads. How did they know? They were watching. They knew. It is constantly increasing gas, right? It becomes wider, broader and broader.

Q: Can you explain what you mean by wider but more excessive?

A: The entire hypothesis depends on Darwin’s law and enlarged poisoning over time. If you are studying evolution, then you know that the theory of evolution is excessive disciplines and remaining on the survival of the most adaptive types. For example, we started with a computer dating, right? It was very year, right? Then someone entered something of Russian dating, then we entered the farmers whose history dates back to something and dates back to the history of Christians. We have become more excessive. Well, we now enter the real time. The world is always always connected. And went to Tinder. Then I got the customization and went to Grindr. So this is the idea of the generalized to excessive customization. So what I did is to try to understand how the delicate development of the processor, its spread, the Internet and the continuous Wi-Fi communication will change everything. What I say is that it will develop into sub -groups of common importance over time.

I just published a piece [on the GainSystems website] It is called “calling for awareness in the era of artificial intelligence”, which was similar to worship like 3 volts. It has about 40,000 downloads. I say mainly, “Can everyone be silent about these things of artificial intelligence and know what really matters and pays attention to the good -style good things?” Because I saw this movie before. I was in 2000 [during the dot-com era]When everyone lied to everyone the last time. It is the great lying, the great Deja Fu. The truth is, if you do not know what you are trying to convert, there is no technology, no matter how advanced, you can turn it on to you. It is a somewhat invitation to awaken hell, stop chase shiny things, return to the basics, and stop buying BS for everyone.

Q: Let’s talk a little about the same prizes. What do you hope to accomplish?

A: Oh, there are two things. One of them, in terms of CSCMP and its conference, is to make everyone sit in their rooms with their arms folded to a presentation, an old model in the last century. We needed to make things more fun and more interesting. So I just wanted to help make the event better.

The second thing that was more important to me, personally, is that I am tired of hearing everyone says: “Everyone absorbs and fails all the time.” I think it is important to celebrate success. I think CSCMP needs to do more.

Editor’s note: The 3 -year 3 V competition will be judged during the CSCMP EDGE 2025 conference in National Harbor, Maryland. The direct competition will include three final contestants before a committee of distinguished judges in Innovation TheaterUnder the auspices, on Monday, October 6. The session will be hosted by ART Mesher himself alongside Rick Blasgen, former CEO CEO.
