Keep alert: Q2 report on shipping fraud

Fraud attempts to shipping – thieves become more coordinated and strategic in their efforts to target shipping brokers and carrier networks, according to the Carrier and Access Management Solutions, which was released this week.

The latest highway report revealed a 41 % increase in fraudulent email attempts and an increase of 23 % in defrauding the identity reported in the mediator in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the first quarter. The highway said that it has placed a sign of more than 495,000 fraudulent email messages and more than 42,000 suspicious phones, and issued nearly 2,300 identity alerts during that time period.

The results reflect wider national trends, according to the highway. The company cited the National Office for Insurance Crime (NCIB), which recently reported a 27 % increase on an annual basis in the theft of American goods, with identity manipulation, email compatibility, and the phone’s identity -based fraud among the best tactics used by fraud.

“The shipping fraud is no longer opportunistic anymore – he is a coordinator and strategic,” Michael Grace, Vice President of Customer Risk Management on the highway, said in a statement announced by the report. “The attackers gain confidence, simulate legitimate behavior, and infiltrate networks through brokers and transmission in blind points in the identity.”

The highway says the brokers are especially at risk. The report provides some major mitigation tactics:

  • Use safe delivery methods for price assurances;
  • Check the communication changes and MC (Sold Motor Carrier) through reliable platforms;
  • It requires multiple factors whenever possible;
  • Educating operating teams on the latest red flags and escalation paths.

Grace added: “The fraudsters are patient. They are watching, waiting and moving when your defenses decrease,” Grace added.
